Listen/Get: Zoot Suit - Greg Preston And The Great Machine
Live, unabashed rock will never ever die. The thing that’s been missing is a full embrace of the ingredients. Thankfully, Greg Preston and The Great Machine take their tunes to 11. After listening to the movement-inducing EP Hate To Love The City, I feel obliged to drive through quiet neighbourhoods with their songs on full blast to rev all of the sleepy folks up. The only thing stopping me is the knowledge that doing this would detract some credit from the rock-ability of the music considering I drive a 2001 Cavalier with tweed interior.
Instead I’ll lead you to the track “Zoot Suit” and urge you to play it in generally quiet areas (your science class, from your work station at the office or perhaps at the next Sunday evening dinner with the family). “Zoot Suit” is a fine statement for the music coming from The Great Machine. Raw but tight, the drums drive, the bass jives, the guitars control your motor functions and Greg’s scraping wail will initiate your vocal spirits.
The band recorded the EP right off the floor which was an inspired choice. It promises fun, shredding music and delivers all at once. And when you hear it, you’re going to want to shred the air and howl til your voice is shot. Then you’ll surely press play again and do it some more.
